November 28, 2007 Be Safe, Share the Space Deputy Transportation Secretary Susan Coward and Governor's Highway Program Director Darrell Jernigan along with Swing employees Wayne Whitley, Director of Safety, Roger Steadman, Driver Trainer and Dan Summitt, President, joined state and local law enforcement officers from across the Triad region, as well as other state and federal officials to launch "Be Safe, Share the Space", a new commercial motor vehicle safety initiative. "Statistics show that crashes involving commercial vehicles are more likely to result in fatalities," said Jernigan. "Be Safe, Share the Space aims to educate both motorists and trucking companies on the importance of driving safely and complying with size and weight regulations to help protect everyone who uses our highways." In 2006, there were a total of 30,519 commercial motor vehicle crashes in North Carolina resulting in more that 160 fatalities. While commercial motor vehicle crashes represented only 8% of all crashes in North Carolina last year, they accounted for 16 percent of all fatalities. The initiative will among other things, increase the public's awareness
about the importance of safely sharing the road with large
commercial vehicles. The Governor's Highway Safety Program has partnered with the N. C. State Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Enforcement Division, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the N. C. Trucking Association for the implementation of this initiative. Swing provided a tractor and their "No Zone" trailer to be used as a back drop for the press conference and also to provide ride-alongs for the officers and reporters . When asked why the equipment was provided Summitt replied "It is imperative for the motoring public to have a better understanding of commercial vehicles and the challenges we face. Giving the reporters first hand knowledge of what truck drivers see while driving allows them to better inform their viewers. This sharing of knowledge is important and will save lives." |
